Styles and types of editing

Some styles and types of editing include:

  • Dissolve- a transition effect where one image gradually fades out while another image simultaneously replaces the original one.
  • Wipe- one shot replaces another by travelling from one side of the frame to the other or with a specific shape. There are specific styles of wipes e.g. barn door wipe, metric wipe, clock wipe etc.
  • Fade to black- it's exactly what it says on the tin, when an image fades to a totally black image.
  • Fade to white- the same as above but instead of fading out to a black screen it fades to a totally white image.
  • Juxtaposition- when one shot is followed by another shot which is contrasting.
  • Graphic Match- it creates a cut between two shots that juxtapose their graphically similar shapes. It can be useful in relating two disconnected scenes, help establish a relationship between two scenes, create a continuity of action or link two ideas with a metaphor.
Examples in music videos:

An example of the dissolve transition is in the Taylor Swift Style music video. at the beginning of the video the camera dissolves from a close up side profile of Taylor to the long shot of a silhouette of a man on a beach in the middle of her head. This suggests to the audience that like the lyric 'we never go out of style', they always come back to each other as this dissolve shows they are connected. Due to him being in the middle of her head, it could represent that she doesn't stop thinking about him, he is always on her mind. It could show that they are joined together, they are a part of each other and they cannot be split apart. This could also be seen as an example of graphic match due to the rock shape fitting into her head which emphasises the point already made about him being part of her and always in her mind/head.

An example of the wipe is in the Taylor Swift Mine music video. At the exposition it wipes from her meeting a boy in a café to them in a relationship sitting on a beach together in her dream of what their future could look like. This helps the audience to distinguish between real life and the dream for this character and that their future is the main focus in her mind at that moment, the other part has gone away. It may represent that it is a distant memory in their future as they have gone so far together. It reflects that the future means that things are no longer the same for these two characters. At the ending a wipe is used to move from her crying about them fighting back to her happy memory of them walking on the beach. This could represent a change in emotion and how their relationship has ups and downs or that she is remembering the past to forget about her feelings of sadness.

An example of fade to black is in the Rihanna California King Bed music video. At the ending it fades to black which could show the end of video and song but also could represent the end of their relationship. They are standing together and then it dissolves to her standing alone before it fades to black suggesting their relationship cannot be fixed, it will end with her being alone. It reflects the message of the song that they were so close but now there is distance between them.

An example of fade to white is in the Demi Lovato Stone Cold music video. At the ending it fades from her standing on the mountain looking out to the sky and forest to a white screen. It could be there to show the ending but it also significantly fades to white which is the colour of the snow which is in the main setting. This song is called 'stone cold' which means completely cold and it is possible that she or he are cold. It is possibly representing the message of this song that she is hurt from watching a former lover move on as white is the colour of snow and we associate snow with being cold.  If it is in reference to her then it could suggest she is dying as feeling cold can be related to this. This is supported through her saying I'm dying on the floor'. However it could also be describing the former lover, that he is cold hearted, he lacks affection for her as he has moved on.

An example of juxtaposition is in the Demi Lovato Made in the USA music video. In this video juxtaposition is used effectively when it changes from a close up of the man as a soldier in his uniform to a mid shot of the man and woman lying on the floor together holding hands. These shots could be showing the contrast between the themes of war and love in this music video. By having these two shots next to each other it suggest that there are two sides to him, two different parts to his life. It can be interpreted that the two are very separate things; they do not join together or that one affects the other, that war affects their love, their relationship, it causes distance and upset for them as a couple.

An example of graphic match in film is the shower scene in Psycho where the woman is stabbed by an intruder and her blood begins to flow into the plug hole of the bath. The closeup of the plug hole dissolves into a close up of her lifeless eye. This is a graphic match due to the similar circular shapes of the plug hole and her eye and is used to create a metaphor, in this case that her life is draining down the hole, it is disappearing just like her blood. This helps to emphasise the hopelessness of the situation for the audience.
