In it's early years, Universal Records was a relatively unimportant extension of the Universal Pictures Group, one of the most successful movie studios in Hollywood.
Universal Records was the label on which Universal Pictures would release soundtracks from their films. Throughout the years, however, Universal Records became an interest in its right and grew and evolved until it became the mega label it is today. Vivendi took over ownership of the label in February 2006.

 It is the largest business group and family of record labels in the world. It started in 1934 as "Decca Records USA" and had some other names, before it became "Universal Music Group" in 1996. The company is based in Santa Monica, California.
In 2016 Universal Music’s global record label revenue share was 28.9% It. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vivendi.
