Mainstream Music Timeline

Definition of mainstream music: 

Mainstream is when something is the common thought of the majority at the time. So in terms of music, it is what is currently popular. Therefore 'mainstream' music is also known as pop music which is short for popular music. 

Timeline

1926- The term 'pop music' is first used as a way of describing 'a piece of music having popular appeal'.

1950s- 'Pop music' originated in Britain and took over the American 'Rock'n'Roll' that before dominated most places. Television is introduced and pop stars gained more popularity through their audience being able to see them.

1954- Elvis Presley records 'That's All Right Mama' at Sun Studios, Memphis.

1955- Chuck Berry's 'Maybellene' is released.

1958- Elvis joins the army.

1962- A music producer called Phil Spector invents the Wall of Sound(recording technique).

1964- The Beatles take America- in March they were in the top five chart positions. Beatlemania had taken over. 

1965- 'Like a Rolling Stone' is released by Bob Dylan. 'My Generation' by The Who, the most aggressive pop group of the mid 60s, is released.

1969- The Stooges' release their first album.

1970- Black Sabbath's first album is released. 

1971- 'What's Going On?' is released by Marvin Gaye. 

1972- David Bowie creates his album and character called 'Ziggy Stardust'. This was the moment that launched glam rock. 

1973- Bob Marley and the Wailers: 'No Woman, No Cry' is released

1977- Death of Elvis Presley. 

1980- The murder of John Lennon

1981- MTV is launched.

1982- 'Thriller' by Michael Jackson is released

1983- Michael Jackson popularizes the moonwalk

1985- Madonna releases 'Material Girl'

1987- 'Sign 'O' the Times' by Prince is released. 

1994- The Spice Girls are formed- first all girl band in an era dominated by boy bands.

1998- Britney Spears releases her first single called '(Hit me) Baby one more time'.

1999- Birth of Napster- a download service providing free music.

2001- George Bush declares Eminem 'The biggest threat to American youth since Polio'.

2003- Beyonce releases her first album 'Dangerously in Love'.

2009- Death of Michael Jackson
