How does editing construct meaning in Weapon of Choice by Fatboy Slim?
Editing is used in this music video to aid the continuity of the performance. At the beginning of the music video shot reverse shot is used when Christopher Walken is sitting in the chair and it cuts to the radio he is looking at and then cuts back to him sitting in the chair. This allows the audience to see from his point of view what he is looking at and therefore feel like we are there. By then reversing this to us seeing his reaction to the music on the radio through the use of this technique the audience get a sense of feelings towards it and may begin to question how he might react, possibly thinking that he will get up and dance. long frames are used in this first part of the video to create tension as the audience wonder what he is going to do. The most common editing transition used in this music video is the cut which are invisible and aid continuity, particularly of the performance in this video and allow the movement and narrative to flow. This video seems to be a mix between a narrative and mainly performance as he is dancing through the hotel but we also get an underlying story of him sitting down not really doing anything and then he hears music and he begins to dance, getting to the point where he is different man at the end as he is flying. There are several cuts in this video each with an individual effect. At the exposition the camera cuts to zoom in from an establishing shot to a mid shot of him sitting in the chair. This allows the audience to see his facial expressions and show that he is the main focus of the video as it goes from a view of the setting to his actions. The pace of the cuts increase as he dances to create action and show how quickly he is moving through the rooms and therefore makes the audience feel as if they are moving fast too as they are trying to keep up with his speed. In the scenes when he is dancing through the room the 180 degree rule is used as the camera stays on one side of his body rather than crossing to look at him from the back. This aids continuity as it means that he is travelling in the same direction. At the end of the video the camera cuts to the different views of him flying so the audience get a sense of his surroundings and what it would be like to be up there. In the middle of this music video match on action is used as he dances through the door, the audience see him move through from the front and then the camera cuts to him moving from another angle. This creates the impression of a sense of continuity and realism which draws the viewer's attention away from the cutting.
