Techniques
Mise en scene- High key lighting to low key lighting- bird singing- change in town's appearance and mood- innocence to violence.
- Colours- red clothing, blood, phone box, paint, fire- danger/death. Purple/pink sky at the end- uneasy, ambiguity. Bright colours (yellow, red, blue) in comparison to the inspector's black suit and dull grey car. Red x's written on the door- illness or death.
- Proxemics- inspector and mayor in the middle shows they are both significant- share the frame. Wickerman statue in the middle presents the power as it is the centre of attention. Mayor in the middle, villagers around him- he is in control. Woman standing in front of the blood dripping acts as a block- creates tension as we do not know what is behind her.
- Costume/hair/makeup- x's on the costume e.g. gardener and farmer- poison. Natural faces suggests they are normal. The inspector is dressed smartly, shows role but also that he is different- possibly represents Muslims or refugees.
- Facial expressions and body language- Inspector looking around- job and curiosity but also weariness/fear. Mayor shows power by using hand gestures to direct villagers and push the inspector. Mayor taps his shoulder several times- as if to say 'it's alright'- comfort. Starts off with mayor trying to shake hands but he shows disappointment which develops into him pushing the inspector- change in feelings toward him. Confusion and shock shown by the inspector- mouth open when he sees model village of them- ambiguity, mysteries, creepy- they knew he was going to be there. The inspector wipes sweat off his brow with cloth- nervous, frightened. Villagers waving- creepy, proud of hanging device- inspector looks shocked most of the time e.g. statue reveal. For most of the video the villagers are expressionless including the mayor- dodgy, uneasy, strange. Shock increases to the end- inspector drops his clipboard. At the end the villagers wave at the camera - creepy, everyone else is next. Inspector looks sad as he wipes his face at the end after surviving the sacrifice.
- Setting and props- village/town- intertextuality innocence, calm and quiet (juxtaposed). X's on the drink the mayor and farmer drink- poison. Wickerman statue- intertextuality. Cloth- nervous, protection- white. Animal masks- intertextuality. Flowers- innocence, happiness contrasted by their later actions. Clipboard shows jobs and nervousness- not talking to anyone, looking down.
Camerawork
- Shots- long shot of man building the wickerman- can't see the whole statue- ambiguity. Same for flowers on hanging device- can't see the noose- appears innocent. Establishing shot of the village- get a feel of the atmosphere of the village- bright. Establishing shot of the inspector being driven in- see how small he is in comparison to the village- power. Reaction shot to noose- shocked, noose, walking away as villagers wave. Establishing shot of him walking in as villagers have what seems to be a celebration- shows how he is surrounded by these people alone. Reaction shot to wickerman statue- pulls rope (shocked face), statue, getting into the statue by the ladder. Long shot of statue shows how small he is. Establishing shot of burning statue surrounded by villagers seems to summarise what the village is actually like.
- Movement- tracking him in the car, zooms in on the mayor speaking to the villagers shows his significance. Zooms in on the mayor and inspector in the model village- how the inspector eyes would be focusing on them. Due to stop motion there is a lack of movement, it tends to stay still as the characters (inspector and mayor) walk across the frame- unusual- reflects the unusual manner of the villagers. Zooms in on the wickerman statue before he pulls the rope, then zooms out- shows the sheer size of it and therefore how threatening and powerful it is- could represent how her wants to move away from it. Tilt- up the statue as he is shut inside- reflect the movement of fire, the movement of the villager's eyes but also show how big it is. Zooms out to show the villagers surrounding the statue- shows how powerful it is with them supporting the sacrifice and therefore emphasising how small he is in all of this, how powerless, vulnerable and unable to escape. At the end it tilts down from the bird to the inspector, wiping his face- bird reflects the end, shows how the end is not death as he has survived.
- Angles- slight high angle of him in the car present him as weak and vulnerable right from the start- foreshadows what is to come. High angle of the mayor and villagers talking- weakness- to a straight angle represents the future change in behaviour and manner. Low angle of the inspector and mayor looking at the model village- suggest power but this is contradicted by a high angle of the mini versions of them in the model village suggesting weakness. High angle of inspector walking past the seesaw- even to the children he is vulnerable. High angle of inspector looking at the noose suggests his weakness- same as when he walks into the celebration. Low angle of statue- powerful, strong, threatening etc.
Editing
- Fade to black to show passing of time and change in location e.g. the mayor starts the tour and in the next shot they are walking in front of a house with a red x being painted on it.
- Pace of cuts increases as he gets locked in the statue- creates action- represents his fast heartbeat and panic. The cuts are fast paced for most of the video which suggests there is a continuous panic and nervousness for the inspector.
- Match on action- when he walks from one set of crops to another, making notes- everything seems normal. Does not match when he is looking at the statue, when it cuts back to him, he is climbing up the ladder.
- Fade to black after the bird at the start and then before at the end- represents the beginning and the ending of the inspector's journey/story.
- Fades to black at the end to show the music video is finished.
Sound
- Diegetic- bird chirping could present the voice of the people- it must keep going even through bad times- shown through the cyclical structure of the bird chirping at the beginning and end.
- Non diegetic- music gets louder at the end- no singing- it gets faster, more high pitched- makes it more dramatic and builds to the climax- presumably his death but in fact his survival- makes it more significant.
